What happens during your test?

Unlike traditional methods involving complicated equipment or lengthy protocols, our RMR testing process is simple, comfortable, and completely non-invasive.

 

You'll lie back on a comfortable couch in a quiet, temperature-controlled room whilst wearing our specialised breathing mask.

 

The mask is lightweight and designed for comfort while it precisely measures your oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production - the core principle of indirect calorimetry.

 

The test takes approximately 15 minutes, during which you'll simply relax and breathe normally. This resting state allows us to establish your true metabolic baseline—how your body functions when completely at rest.

 

Our system analyses your breathing patterns to determine:

  • Exactly how many calories your body burns at rest

  • How efficiently you use fat versus carbohydrates for fuel

  • The overall health of your metabolism

 

All this from just breathing normally!

  • Yes! The test simply measures your breathing patterns while at rest. There's no radiation, electrical impulses, or invasive procedures involved. It's completely safe for everyone, including pregnant women, those with pacemakers, or people with medical conditions.

  • For the most accurate results, we recommend:

    • Fasting for 6-12 hours before your test

    • Abstaining from alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine for at least 2 hours

    • No exercise for at least 24 hours; take a rest day before the test

    • Getting a good night's sleep

    • Arriving 10-15 minutes early to allow your body to fully relax before testing

  • The actual breathing measurement takes about 15 minutes. With preparation time and a brief review of preliminary findings, you should allow approximately 45 minutes for your appointment.

  • For those tracking changes to their metabolism (for example, during weight loss or athletic training), we recommend testing every 3-4 months. However, you can choose a schedule that suits your specific goals and budget. Some clients test seasonally to adjust their nutrition throughout the year.

  • Most people find the mask very comfortable. It's lightweight and designed to fit securely without feeling restrictive. You'll simply breathe normally through the mask while relaxing on our comfortable couch.

    If you experience claustrophobia or anxiety about wearing masks, please let us know beforehand.

     

    Please note: the mask only covers your nose and mouth (not your eyes), and you'll be in a relaxed, controlled environment with our specialist nearby at all times. We can also arrange a brief trial with the mask before your appointment to ensure you feel comfortable proceeding with the full test.
